More Australians prefer dogs for household pets
A lot of people are either a dog or cat ‘person’. However, many seem to favour one over the other, with roughly two thirds of respondents to our latest survey telling us that dogs make the best pets. To the contrary, 22% think cats are better pets.
When we compared male and female respondents against one another, it showed that more women prefer cats as pets than men do (24% versus 19%), while the opposite was true for those that prefer dogs (63% of women versus 67% of men).
In other results, it’s plain that younger Australians are more inclined than their elders to spend extra cash on behalf of their pets. Gen X and Y fork out approximately $1,534 annually * on their pets, versus a Baby Boomer budget of just $1,196 ^ .
Another significant outlay for pet owners is the cost of pet food. While close to half our respondents purchase standard pet food straight from their supermarket, 30% buy premium brands from pet stores, and 12% prepare special meals at home. We noticed similar results in 2013, where the pets of one in four respondents had a better diet than their owners .
